Abstract

In order to find a good flux for submerged arc welding on the rod which contains max. 0.15% C, max. 0.10% Si and 1.2-1.4% Mn, various experiments were made with the following results:
1) For the two types of flux compositions, i. e. SiO2-CaO-MgO-MnO and SiO2-CaO-MgO system, proper range of each oxide component was decided and given in a table. The mechanical property and weldability of weld steel were very effective within this range of flux composition.
2) Increase of alumina content is likely to give bad effect on weldability and to extend depth of weld in both types of flux composition.
3) Ability of desulphurizing weld steel depends upon the basicity of SiO2-CaO-MgO-MnO type of composition.
4) Mechanical properties of weld steel were good but the shock value was poor.
