Abstract

A physico-chemical study has been made on the chemical reactions between molten slags and metals in welding processes by arc welding electrodes containing Fe-Si or both Fe-Si and Fe-Mn in its coatings as deoxidizers, and the following results were obtained.
(1) K'Mn is decreased with increasing Fe-Si contents in the coatings, but independent of the slag-basicities in the same deoxidation condition.
(2) It seems that K'O is independent of the slag-basicities, the compositions of metals and the deoxidation conditions.
(3) K'Si is decreased with increasing the slag-basicities and Fe-Si contents in the coatings.
(4) Activity coefficient of SiO2 is increased with decreasing the slag-basicities, but independent of the deoxidation conditions.
(5) These results suggest that the chemical reactions in welding processes are not liable to be reached exactly the equilibrium state.
