Treatment of surface to be welded is one of the most important factor affecting the weld characteristics of diffusion welds. As oxides of silver are dissolved above 230°C, specimens were ion-plated with silver to prevent welded surface from the contamination with oxides. Specimens covered with silver was diffusion welded in atmosphere and vacuum, and the effect of surface treatment by silver plating was investigated. The following results were obtained.
Joints of specimens covered with silver, which are welded below 600°C in atmosphere and vacuum, reveal no difference in weld strength. But tensile strength of joints, which are welded above 700°C in atmopshere, decreases due to the oxide layer formed at interface between silver and base metal.
