Clinical Predictors of Discharge Timing Following Total Hip Arthroplasty

The Role of Self-efficacy and Physical Function

Abstract

Objective: While numerous studies have examined physical function before and after total hip arthroplasty (THA), the relationship between discharge timing and early postoperative self-efficacy remains poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the associations among discharge timing after THA, perioperative physical function, and self-efficacy.

Methods: A total of 84 joints undergoing THA were divided into two groups based on length of hospital stay: a short-stay group (≤18 days) and a long-stay group (≥19 days). Intergroup comparisons were performed. Logistic regression analyses were then conducted to identify independent factors associated with discharge timing.

Results: The preoperative model included age, the 2-step test score, and the Timed Up & Go (TUG) test score as independent variables, whereas the 1-week postoperative model included age, the Modified Falls Efficacy Scale (MFES) score, and the TUG test score. No significant factors were identified in the preoperative model. However, in the 1-week postoperative model, the MFES score was significantly associated with discharge timing.

Conclusion: Predicting discharge timing based solely on preoperative indicators is limited, suggesting that assessment of early postoperative self-efficacy may be valuable for predicting discharge timing. The association between self-efficacy and discharge timing may serve as an important indicator for optimizing discharge planning and informing interventions to enhance postoperative self-efficacy.
