Abstract
We confirmed assumptions that had been used in the literatures for calculating the surface area of the southern basin of Lake Biwa. The area of 58 km2 generally use still in had been estimated based upon the shoreline in 1955 when reclamation had hardly begun. The area of 55 km2 from another study represented the situation valid in 1969. In 1998 the area was reestimated using the most current topographical maps, resulting in the total area of the basin at 54.5 km2, while the area of the water surface was put at 51.6 km2. The distribution range and biomass of macrophytes in the southern basin on September 2001, which had been subsequently reported by my colleague and I in 2004, were modified to 29 km2 and 6,500 tons, respectively, both of which were the newly calculated results used in this study.
