On the application of roentgen tomography to bone diseases

Abstract

It is well known that tomography is widely applied to the lung diseases but it is not yet universally diffused in the region of orthopedic.
Applying this method to the congenital dislocation of hip, tuberculosis of bones, osteomyelitis, fracture of bones, etc., I have as a practisioner benifited so much that I shall now insist upon the effects, mentioning some instances.
1) The picture of tomography ought to be taken where it is hard to take photographs by ordinary roentgenography. (The sternum, for instance)
2) By the figure of tomography we can clearly find the condition, position and degree of focus in the tuberculized bone which can not be taken by ordinary roentgenography.
3) When the plaster cast is put on the congenital dislocation of hip, we can not sometimes discern the details of the affected parts, by ordinary roentgenography, on account of the interference of the shadows of the plaster cast.
But by the figures of tomography, we can clearly find even the nucleus of the head of femur and resarch the relative situations of the acetabulum and the head of femur due to the disappearance of the plaster cast.
