Abstract
A patient was a 43-year-old man with an anterior mediastinal lipoma, followed as an abnormal shadow of chest plain roentogenography for 21 years. CT revealed a mixed and low-density mass in the right anterior mediastinum. The CT number of the tumor was -100 units. The tumor was removed by thoracotomy.
We discuss the clinical features of mediastinal lipomas in 16 adult cases reported in Japan. Many cases were found in the 40 to 59-year-old group, and no significant difference in the male-to-female ratio. Twelve of 16 cases were in the anterior mediastinum. Fifteen were intrathoracic lipomas. Five cases had subjective symptoms. Recently, CT has been found useful for the preoperative diagnosis of mediastinal lipoma. Surgical treatment is recommended.
