Abstract
A 62-year-old woman with a large lump in the left breast visited Saitama Medical Center. The lump had rapidly increased in size after trauma to the breast. We diagnosed the lump to be an old fibroadenoma, and performed simple mastectomy. The frozen section revealed it to be squamous cell carcinoma, so we resected the major and minor pectoral muscles and the axillary and subclavian lymph nodes. She died of lung metastases 15 months after surgery.
Mastectomy revealed an old giant fibroadenoma and a mass of squamous cell carcinoma. They were in close with each other, and the ducts of the fibroadenoma were also affected by the squamous cell carcinoma. We were unable to conclude which was the primary site. It seemed that this case, in which an old giant fibroadenoma and a mass of squamous cell carcinoma were coexistent, was very rare.
In addition, we discussed the definition, development and prognosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the breast.
