Omental cysts are uncommon and were seldom diagnosed before laparotomy because they have no common physical findings or clinical course and show different clinical feautures according to size and site.
Sixty percent of them are found in patients with acute abdomen and chronic abdominal pain and 40% are found in patients undergoing laparotomy for other diseases. One-third of adults with omental cyst and two-thirds of children have acute symptoms.
Therefore, the possibility of omental cyst must not be overlooked when diagnosing patients with acute abdominal symptoms.
A case of omental cyst in a 3-year-old girl with acute abdominal symptom due to volvulus is described.
