A case of pure squamous cell carcinoma of the breast is reported. A 62-year-old female was admitted to our hospital complaining of left breast swelling after trauma. Blood and imaging examinations revealed breast abscess and hematoma. First the conservative therapy was performed, but the patient didn't recover well. Therefore, an excisional biopsy was performed under a suspicion of a possible breast cancer. A histologic examination revealed a squamous cell carcinoma and standard radical mastectomy was carried out.
On the 58th day after operaiton, she could leave the hospital. Our experience of this case has emphasized the necessity of a strict observation and histologic examination at the time of the diangosis of cancers associated with extensive necrosis, which are often seen as benign lesions.
A total of 27 cases of pure squamous cell carcinoma of the breast in Japan was also reviewed.
