Abstract

A rare case of leiomyosarcoma of the ileum presenting with intraperitoneal bleeding is reported together with a review of the literature.
Intestinal tumor, especially leiomyosarcoma presenting with acute peritonitis is a rare condition.
A 39-year-old female was admitted with the chief complaint of severe lower abdominal pain. The patient was operated on under a presumptive diagnosis of perforative peritonitis. Extraluminal growth twisted by 180 degree with ruptured capsule in the small intestine, measuring 10×7×3cm was found, approximately 130cm oral to the ileocecal valve.
Intraperitoneal bleeding was caused by rupture of the tumor. Tumor excised was a well circumscribed growth, and the cut surface revealed areas of cystic degeneration and hemorrhage.
Histologically it was diagnosed as well differentiated leiomyosarcoma with 10 mitosis in 10 high power fields (10/10 H. P. F.).
Postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient has been fine for two years.
