Abstract
We describe an extremely rare case of Meckel's diverticulum carcinoid associated with breast cancer, together with a review of the literature. There are 18 cases of carcinoid arising in the Meckel's diverticulum in the Japanese literature, but no case of such carcinoid tumor associated with breast cancer has been reported as far as we could review. The patient was an 86-year-old female complaining of abdominal discomfort, vomiting, and right lower abdominal pain. Minute examination on admission made a diagnosis of ileus. Conservative treatment gave no remission. At the same time, a tumor in the region A of the left breast was palpated, which was of T3aN0M0 in stage IIIa. Then radical operation for ileus and left partial mastectomy were carried out. During operation the ileus was inferred to be caused by Mackel's diverticulum, and the Meckel's diverticulum was extirpated. Pathologiacal examination revealed that the carcinoid arised in the wall of Meckel's diverticulum and the breast tumor was a solid tubular carcinoma. As of one year and 9 months after surgery, no recurrence is found.
