Abstract
Rupture of liver abscess into the retroperitoneal space is of rare occurrence, while liver abscess often ruptures into the peritoneal cavity.
A 69-year-old man with Behcet disease, who had received predonisolone for about one year, was admitted to our hospital showing a high fever. Multiple liver abscesses were found occupying posterior segment of right lobe, medial segment of left lobe and lateral segment of left lobe. He was treated with antibiotics with a relief of symptoms. Two months later he had a high fever again. Another abscess was disclosed in the retroperitoneal space around the right kidney. Operative drainage was performed 14 days after the percutaneous catheter drainage that showed no symptomatic remission. He was discharged home on the 87th postoperative day.
Because postoperative CT scanning revealed an air retention in the former cavity of hepatic abscess (right lobe), this retroperitoneal abscess was proved to come from the direct rupture of the liver abscess into the retroperitoneal space.
