Abstract
A giant leiomyoma of the esophagus diagnosed by endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is reported.
A 41-year-old male complained of dysphagia and palpitation. A mediastinal tumor was suspected by the chest X-ray film, esophagography, and plain computerized tomography (CT). EUS revealed that it was the submucosal tumor having continuity with muscularis propria (pm) layer of the esophageal wall. Preoperative diagnosis of leiomyoma of the esophagus was made. Resection of thoracal esophagus followed by retrosternal reconstraction using gastric tube was performed because of the big size of the tumor. Resected specimen consisted of two tumors, 8×8×6 cm and 7×5×3.5 cm in size. The pathological diagnosis was leiomyoma.
EUS can visualize the stractual relationship between the tumor and the esophageal wall, in that it is useful to differentiate submucosal tumors from mucomembrous lesions or extrinsic pressure on the esophageal wall due to some causes such as mediastinal tumor.
