Abstract
A 22-year-old man with focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) of the liver which was located in the hepatic medial segment was successfully operated upon for avoiding the risk of intra-abdominal rupture. The patient complained of epigastric discomfort. A bulging mass in the medial segment of the liver was revealed by ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Hepatic scintigraphy demonstrated the mass as a hot spot. Abdominal angiography showed the hypervascular mass with a spokewheel pattern in the arterial phase and the conspicuous deep-stained mass in the capillary phase, strongly suggesting the diagnosis of FNH. In an analysis of 68 cases seen in the Japanese literature, enhanced CT, hepatic scintigraphy, angiography and MRI gave us useful characteristic findings, which appeared to be concerned with patho-morphological characters.
