Abstract
von Recklinghausen's disease in association with a nonepithelial malignant tumor such as neurofibroma is often seen in the literature, however, it is rare in association with an epithelial malignant tumor. In this paper recent experience with 2 cases of von Recklinghausen's disease associating with breast cancer is described with some discussion of accumulated cases seen in the literature.
Case 1: A 43-year-old woman was seen at the hospital because of a palpated right breast tumor, 8×6 cm in size in the lower part of the right breast in August 1988. There was also a 10×8 cm neurofibroma in the neck. The patient had been noticed the breast tumor since about one year before. Preoperative staging was T3a, N1a, M0, and stage IIIa. Case 2: A 54-year-old woman was seen at the hospital because of a palpated right breast tumor in April, 1988. The tumor was 2.5×2 cm in size locating in the outside of lower part of the right breast, which was T2, N0, M0, and stage II.
Both cases underwent radical mastectomy (Br+Ax+Mj+Mn). Histologically the both were solid carcinoma. As to nuclear DNA quantity, case 1 was of DNA aneuploid and case 2 DNA diploid types. von Recklinghausen's disease is considered a hereditary disease due to mutation, and the these cases reported here are interesting in the relation with the occurrence of malignant tumor.
