Abstract
Primary carcinoma of the vermiform appendix is uncommon. In this paper 2 cases of carcinoma of the vermiform appendix, including one of double cancer with a transverse colon cancer and another presenting with intussusception, are reported on together with some discussion of literature.
Case 1: A 74-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of a weight loss and anemia. From strict examination she was diagnosed as having a transverse colon cancer, and right hemicolectomy was carried out. In the resected specimen a tumor of the appendix was found. Histologically it was well differentiated adenocarcinoma. A diagnosis of double cancer was made.
Case 2: This patient presented with right upper abdominal pain and diarrhea, and developed intussusception due to a tumor of the ileocecal region. Biopsy revealed an adenocarcinoma. Right hemicolectomy was performed under a diagnosis of cecal cancer. The resected specimen revealed that the mass was a tumor centering on the root of appendix. A diagnosis of carcinoma of the vermiform appendix was made.
The case of double cancer of appendix and other organ is the 11th case and another of carcinoma of the vermiform appendix presenting with intussusception, the second case in the Japanese literature, which is very rare.
