Abstract
We report a case of surgical treatment of left adrenal metastasis 3 years and 7 months after hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), in which subsequent right adrenal metastasis was also detected.
A 65-year-old male underwent hepatectomy for HCC, and recurrent foci in the residual liver were controlled by arterial embolization therapy. Left adrenal metastasis was found by CT 3 years after hepatectomy and gradually enlarged 6 months later. Therefore, left adrenalectomy was performed. However, right adrenal metastasis was detected by CT 3 months after left adrenalectomy, which quickly enlarged 3 months later, and he died of pneumonia.
In the autopsy cases, adrenal metastasis is well known as one of the extrahepatic metastases of HCC, however, it is rarely found in clinical cases. In this paper our experience with surgical excision of left adrenal metastasis from HCC is described, together with some discussion on possible alternative methods which can be selected in terms of the literature.
