INFLUENCE OF IMMEDIATE BREAST RECONSTRUCTION ON THE PROGNOSIS -IMMEDIATE BREAST RECONSTRUCTION USING AUTOLOGENOUS TISSUE AND PROGNOSIS OF BREAST CANCER PATIENTS-

Abstract

Recently, mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction (MIBR) using autologenous tissues such as a latissimus dorsi or rectus abdominis musculocutaneous flap has become an accepted procedure in the treatment of breast cancer. In this study, the relapse-free and overall survival of 83 patients who underwent mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction using the autologenous tissues were studied in comparison with those of 153 patients with breast cancer who underwent mastectomy without immediate reconstruction. As a result, 5-year and relapse-free survival rates were 92% and 90% in reconstruction patients, while 92% and 86% in non-reconstruction patients, respectively. There was no significant difference between both patient groups. This comparison was accomplished using multivariate analysis to correct for baseline inequalities between the patient groups. After adjustment for the relevant prognostic factors, no significant difference was found between the two groups. It can be concluded that MIBR using autologenous tissues does not substantially affect the survival of patients.
