Abstract
To evaluate the operation of cholelithiasis, postoperative complications and follow-up results were studied in 276 patients undergoing cholecystectomy in the department during a last one decade. Both preoperative complications and symptoms were not correlated to postoperative complications and symptoms. Postoperative complications were present in 37 patients (13.4%), but most of them were not serious and well controlled. Two hundred and twenty-nine patients (82.8%) could be followed up by questionnaires and postoperative symptoms were present in 26 (11.4%). Of the 26 patients 18 underwent various examinations, and there was no abnormal findings in the imaging and blood tests in 16, except 2 with chronic hepatitis. Abdominal pain, which was the major postoperative symptom, was present in 14 patients (6.1%), but no symptom was seen in any patients more than 5 years after operation. These results suggest that cholecystectomy was quite satisfactory on postoperative complications and symptoms and that it was the best treatment for gallbladder stones considering its curability and a possible risk of coexistence of cancer.
