Abstract
In order to certify the safety of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LSC), LSC was compared to open cholecystectomy for postporeative clinical course and complications. Fifty patients except those treated in early period were served as LSC group, and another 50 operated on at the department did as open cholecystectomy group. Symptomatic gallstone disease was most common in either group. Mean hospital stay was 7.5 days after LSC, whereas 13.9 days after open cholecystectomy. Patients could have oral intake on 1.2 postoperative day in LSC group and 3.0 POD in the other. Although elevations in GOT, GPT and LDH after operation were seen in both groups, there was no significant difference between two groups. There was no death nor major complication in both groups. Minor complications such as bile discharge from drain and hyperamylasemia were noted after either procedure with a similar rate.
These results demonstrate that LSC is comparable to open cholecystectomy in the frequency of postoperative complications and has less surgical invasion that was shown by favorable postoperative clinical course. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy may be appliable in majority of patients undergoing cholecystectomy.
