A 53-year-old woman under hemodialysis for 10 years due to chronic renal insufficiency underwent total parathyroidectomy and parathyroid autotransplant, because she had developed osteodystrophic symptoms. Histological examination revealed the presence of adenoma in one gland and normal parathyroid tissue in the other glands. This case seemed to be characteristic of tertiary hyperparathyroidism.
The S phase fraction (SPE) of this adenoma, measured by flow cytometry, was 56%. This was higher than the mean SPF (14.6%) of 15 glands taken from six patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism. Histologically, those 15 glands showed hyperplasia.
