Abstract
This paper reports a case of coecocutaneus fistula developed fifty years after appendectomy.
An 82-year-old man was seen at the hospital in 1992 because of a 10-day history of inflammation of the skin around the old appendectomy wound which was performed in 1942. Plain abdominal radiographs and CT scan revealed an abscess containing abnormal gas and much pus was released through a small skin incision. There was no malignant possibility nor association of Crohn disease, and conservative treatments with drainage and chemotherapy were started. The abscess disappeared and the fistura was spontaneously closed.
Coecocutaneus fistula is known as a surgical complication of appendectomy occuring within months after the operation. The delayed presentation of such a fistula many years after appendectomy is rare.
