Abstract
Malignant schwannoma of the small intestine is a particularly rare lesion, and only ten cases have been reported in the Japanse literature. We herein describe a case of malignant schwannoma and discuss the relevant literature.
A 67-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of tarry stool. Blood examination indicated anemia. The abdomen was flat and soft, and no tumor was palpated. Tumor markers were in normal range. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and barium enema showed no abnormalities. CT scan disclosed a low density mass, measuring 3×2cm which was enhanced homogeneously by contrast medium. Superior mesenteric angiography showed neovascularization and A-V shunt of the tumor. The tumor was located in the jejunum 8cm from the Treitz' ligament. Curative operation which included a partial resection of the jejunum involving the tumor with extramural growth was performed. Microscopically the tumor was continued to submucosal layer of the jejunum and consisted of spindle cells with trabecular proliferation and palisading pattern. Immunohistochemical examination revealed that anti-smooth muscle actin was stained negatively and S-100 protein positively in the tumor cells. Histology of the tumor resulted in malignant schwannoma of the jejunum.
