Esophageal submucosal tumor (SMT) is arelatively rare disease representing only about 1% of all esophageal tumors. This report presents four patients with SMT: leiomyoma in three cases and congenital cyst in the remaining case. By endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS), findings in leiomyoma revealed homogeneous parenchymal echoes with smooth surface and the tumor continued from muscularis propria. On the other hand, findings in congenital cyst revealed homogeneous and high echoes with smooth surface that exist between submucosa and muscularis propria. It is thought that the EUS's view of the cyst is homogeneous parenchymal echoes because of high viscid substance.
EUS was effective in evaluating the quality and location of the SMTs. The four cases are discussed with reference to the pertinent literature.
