Abstract
This paper reports a case of hyperparathyroidism with von Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis. A 31-year-old female was admitted to the hospital, because of lumbago and hip joint pain. Her skin was covered with multiple nodules, which was diagnosed as neurofibroma by histological examination of the biopsy specimen, and “cáfe au lait” spots. Physical examination showed an elastic soft mass sized by 2.5cm on the right side of the neck. Blood chemical examination showed elevated serum calcium, alkaline phosphatase and parathyroid hormone levels, and lowered level of serum phosphate. Roentgenographic evidence of pelvic bony demineralization was found and CT findings of the neck showed a tumor of parathyroid. The patient was diagnosed as hyperparathyroidism associated with neurofibromatosis. The tumor of the parathyroid was excised. Microscopic studies of the resected parathyroid tumor showed adenoma. In a review of the literature this association of hyperparathyroidism and von Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis is rarely seen and there is a report indicating a probable correlation with multiple endocrine adenoma. This case represented here appears valuable in such background.
