Abstract
Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis relatively common in children, but extremely rare in adults. Recent experience with an adult case of the disease is presented here.
A 55-year-old man visited another hospital because of abdominal full sensation, and was referred to the hospital. Upper gastrointestinal series showed a string sign of the pylorus. Endoscopic examination revealed pyloric stenosis representing a uterine cervix-like appearance of unknown genesis. Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis was suspected, but a possible malignancy could not be ruled out. Distal gastrectomy with Billroth surgery was performed. The postoperative course was uneventful. Pathological examination of the resected specimen showed hypertrophy of the pyrolic circular muscle. No ulcer nor malignant findings were noted in the pyrolus. This case was diagnosed as adult hypertrophic pyloric srenosis.
