Abstract

A 79-year-old man with acute cholecystitis underwent a simple cholecystectomy on February 4, 1993. Histological examination revealed well differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma of the gallbladder. Due to his advanced age, he refused to undergo reoperation. Alternatively, he had taken UFT-E 300mg/day for ten months after the simple cholecystectomy. In June, 1994, he had a right upper abdominal pain. Enhanced CT scanning showed a low density tumor mass abuot 7cm in size surrounded with an enhanced surfuce at the gallbladder fossa. Serum levels of CEA and CA19-9 elevated to 7.3ng/ml and 4400U/ml, respectively. Under diagnosis of local recurrence of the gallbladder cancer, he started to take 5-FU 150mg/day per os. Four months later the abdominal pain disappeared. CT scanning showed that the tumor became smaller in size. And the serum levels of CEA and CA 19-9 decreased to 3.0ng/ml and 252U/ml respectively. Twenty-eight months after the operation metastasis to the Virchow's lymph node was noted but no evidence of recurrence has been revealed by CT scanning.
