Abstract

A surgical case of amyloid tumor as an abdominal mass lesion is reported. An 85-year-old man was admitted with abdominal pain. On admission, a first-sized hard mass was palpated in the left lateral abdominal region. An abdominal mass of irregular structure with a high density area was demonstrated by CT scan. An angiogram showed stretching of a branch of the superior mesenteric artery and a hypovascular area.
Laparotomy was performed on suspicion of a mesenteric tumor. A hard, uneven mesenteric mass measuring 10cm in diameter and several mass lesions in the small intestine 100cm from the ligament of Treitz were found. The mesenteric mass and part of the small intestine were resected. Histologically, massive deposition of homogeneous amyloid protein was seen. Postoperative examination revealed no history of any chronic disease, no malignancy associated with secondary amyloidosis, and no evidence of multiple myeloma. According to the literature, a total of 13 cases of amyloid tumor of the intestine have been reported, including our case. The characteristics, symptoms and treatment are discussed in view of the literature.
