Abstract

It is known that accidental intake or suicidal attempt by the intake of various chemical drugs including acid or alkalis causes corrosion starting from the lumen of the upper gastrointestinal tracts and that the prognosis is likely to be serious. We treated a patient who ingested nitric acid and developed corrosive deformation in the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, jejunum and as far as in the peritomeum as a result of gastrointestinal perforation and we had great difficulty in teating the patient.
The patient was a 49-year-old man who was engaged in jewel processing. He ingested about 100cc (estimation) of nitric acid at home and was admitted to the ICU in the hospital with severe abdominal pain, and an emergency operation was performed. Total gastrectomy, pancreatoduodenectomy and resection of jejunum were conducted. The external fistula was constructed for the pancreatic duct, common bile duct, and jejeunum. The esophageal lower end was closed by suture. But the patient died of multiple organ failure on Day 17 after the onset of the disease.
