Abstract
Hemangioma of the breast is a rare benign tumor. Only a few cases of the disease together with sonographic and mammographic findings have been reported. We report a case of cavernous hemangioma of the breast.
A 63-year-old woman was seen at the hospital because of a palpable mass in the left inside-lower breast. On physical examination, a slightly ill-defined, elastic-hard mass 18mm in diameter was palpated, and no skin changes such as Delle were seen. Based on mammography, ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging, hemangioma was thought as a probable differential diagnosis. Mammographical imaging revealed a lobulated mass with distinct margin and diagnosed as category 4. By a fine needle aspiration biopsy, the endothelial cells and macrophage with hemogiderin were examined with a miniscope. We could not differentiate this tumor as breast cancer from benign tumor such as hemangioma by these discord results. Surgical excision of the lesion was performed under local anesthesia. At histology it was found to be a cavernous hemangioma. We reviewed a few previous reports and found several characteristic findings of the breast hemangioma. These characteristic findings included a lobulated mass on mammography, and an iso or low-echogenic lesion which is flat in morphology and heterogeneous in its center and has sptum on ultrasonography. And a fine needle aspiration cytology yields only hematological components.
