Abstract
We report a case of a gastric carcinoma producing carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9). A 51-year-old woman demonstrated epigastric pain and high values of serum CA19-9 were discovered in April 2000. An upper gastrointestinal series showed pyloric stenosis. Under the diagnosis of suspected gastric carcinoma, a laparotomy was performed in June 2000. A gastric tumor had invaded the transverse colon and a total gastrectomy and colectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy were performed. Histopathological examination showed poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. Immunohistochemical staining with anti-CA19-9 monoclonal antibody showed positive staining in the carcinoma cells. The serum CA19-9 level decreased after the operation, but gradually increased, and the serum carcinoembryonic antigen level also increased. Anticancer therapy was performed, but the patient contracted peritonitis carcinomatosa, and died in February 2002.
