Abstract

Series of man-made impacts to river systems for local optimization had induced adverse responses of the river-basin-scale sediment transport system with respect to flood disaster prevention, water resources use, environment preservation and so on. “The integrated management of the river-basin-scale sediment transport system” has been becoming the key to coping with the complexity and the vastness of such responses in a sustainable manner. To put this concept into practice, it is crucial to coordinate and set priorities in widely extended research and development (R&D) fields on sediment transport system management, as well as furthering each R&D such as sabo works passing harmless sediment downstream, sustainable measures for reservoir sedimentation and coastal erosion, and impact assessment of sediment supply to river courses. This overview paper, by summarizing papers submitted to the present journal with current topics relevant, intends to draw a whole picture relating R&D to implementing the integrated management and to promote discussion on scenario-driven R&D and initiatives to be taken.
