Abstract

Ganga Basin, the largest river basin in India, is supporting nearly 40 percent of the country’s population. The Ganga and its tributaries, besides being the source of water supply and irrigation, are regarded as sacred rivers and are intensively used for bathing by the people. In recent years these rivers have been significantly polluted by the increased human activities, adversely affecting human health and river ecosystem. In response to a request from the Government of India, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) implemented a development study in order to understand pollution mechanism in the basin and formulate a water quality management plan consisting of sewerage and non-sewerage schemes to improve the water quality of the Ganga.
