Abstract

Most of lands areas in Japan are covered by hilly and mountains areas and, the rainfall concentrate on the rainy season and typhoon season. Therefore, dams are very important for flood adjustment and stable water supply. On the other hand, necessity of flood control dam is reviewed in recent years, because of concerning environmental issues. Here, forest slopes are paid attention as natural dam by using its ability of storage water. But, it is not clear that how much rainwater can be stored on forest slopes during rainfall and what happens to saturated through flow in the subsoil layers. That means, it is important to clarify the behaviors of rainfall infiltration and groundwater generation in the top 1-2 m thickness of subsurface layers of forest slopes.

Therefore, the authors established a monitoring system of rainfall infiltration on the forest slopes. In this paper, behaviors of rainfall infiltration and the amount of rainwater that can be stored on forest slopes will be discussed based on monitoring results.
