This paper presents an overview of papers submitted to the special theme "Advances in river engineering and adaptation to climatic and social changes." There are three papers on the impact assessment of sediment yield, or economical risks due to climatic changes. Two papers study new operations of reservoirs for adaptation to climatic changes. A new scheme of designing cross-sections of rivers taking into account of both flood control and river environment conservation is proposed. Three papers discuss new river management strategies. It is difficult to implement adaptation to climatic and social changes only by river improvement, and it is necessary to establish a new strategy with the perspective of river basin management. Through the overview, we emphasize that the impacts of climatic and social changes on river management policies is a good opportunity to advance river engineering further.
