Abstract

The present study aims to clarify the difference between organisms and physical environmental characteristic of different types of river banks, consisting of a type of natural riverbank and two types of artificial banks, in order to collect fundamental knowledge about the development of new shore protection.

The result shows that the organisms inhabiting on the natural river bank are different from the organisms on artificial river banks. Collembola and Geothelphusa dehaani are dominant species on the natural bank, and high wet condition and natural soil materials such as sand and gravels cover are found on the natural bank. According to the previous studies, It is thought that those physical characteristics found on the natural bank provide preferable habitats with the dominant species. We will need to apply this result for the development of new types of shore protection.
