Abstract

This paper aims to facilitate understanding of the chain-reaction damage of Japanese firms that had production facilities in Thailand, in the face of the 2011 Chao Phraya River Flood. Some distinct characteristics of their chain-reaction damage, or extension of indirect economic loss due to specific nature of export-orientation of the flood-affected firms, were identified. The study used diverse methods including desk study, surveys and interviews while a statistical tool was used for the part of analyzing correlation between inundation water depth and recovery period. Some important factors such as types of business, location of factories, types and location of business partners, among others, were recognized as important factors that influence the chain-reaction damage and recovery patterns. By using regression technique, correlation between inundation water depth and recovery period were observed.
