Abstract

It is important to evaluate the probability of levee failures during floods and consider the countermeasure by reinforcement to reduce the flood risk due to levee breach. The authors developed the evaluation method for failure probability of levees on the impermeable foundation ground. However, the present evaluation method is not able to explain how permeable foundation ground under the levee and levee reinforcement affect seepage lines in the levee, and also probability of levee failures.

In this study, we develop a new estimation method of unsteady quasi-two dimensional seepage lines in the levee by considering the permeable foundation ground under the levee and executing levee reinforcements. Furthermore, effects of the levee reinforcement on reduction in the probability of levee failures are investigated by the new estimation method.
