It is important to estimate the locations of levee failures during floods and consider countermeasures to reduce the risk of the levee breach. The authors have suggested the estimation method for the locations of levee failures by using the levee vulnerability index. However, it is not clear how is the adaptability of the levee vulnerability index in the reach with longitudinal changes in the soil structures of the levee and ground foundation like the Kinu River.
In this study, we estimate the levee vulnerability index during the 2015 large flood in the Kinu River. Also, the adaptability of the levee vulnerability index is investigated based on the locations of actual levee failures during the flood. It is furthermore shown that levee failure types are determined by the levee vulnerability index.
