Abstract

Debris wood, which is created by landslides following heavy rainfall, damages downstream bridges and other structures. In 2018, heavy rains in the northern Kyushu area caused debris-wood damage; however, impermeable sabo dams were in place to moderate the effects. A nationwide project, started in 2017, has created an urgent demand for proposals for effective countermeasures against debris wood damage. In this paper, we propose countermeasures that take into account the mechanisms of debris-wood occurrence and flow; the effect of these countermeasures on land-use and maintenance are also considered. We validated the proposed countermeasures experimentally, demonstrating that debris-wood rotated in response to a change in flow.
