Abstract

Data of "National Censuses on River Environments" by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. are the only major database on species distribution of Japanese rivers. However, the database has not been sufficiently applied to researches on river environment because of its some weak points. To evaluate the potentiality of the database, this paper shows several means to overcome the weak points and the examples of their applications to the analysis of relationship between river environments and species distribution The means include binarization of fish presence, quantification theory 4, principal component analysis, estimation of flow velocity by simulation using distributed hydrological model, estimation of COD load based on basin land use and so on. The results of application showed the relationship between the characteristics of fish and benthic community and river environments such as water quality and flow velocity. The results suggests the potentiality of the database.
