Abstract

The ratio of TV viewing time is high in the daily life of the elderly and it is expected that there may be some relationship between TV viewing activity and daily life functioning. This study aimed to investigate the change between present TV viewing style and past viewing style and to find the relationship between TV viewing style and daily life functioning in the elderly. A questionnaire survey on TV viewing activity and the Kihon Checklist to 407 in-home elderly was conducted and the result was analyzed. TV viewing time, popular types of watched programs and principal motive for viewing in the result of this research were almost the same as those in past reports, and these were 3 hours, “News” and “Weather forecast” and information acquisition, respectively. The result also showed that there is a correlation between the decline of daily life functioning and viewing frequency of TV programs on “social/information” and “learning/education” in the old elderly.
