Abstract
When a high embankment is constructed on soft ground, there usually arises a problem of bearing capacity and settlement of foundation. Usual practice to solve such problem is to determine the unconfined compressive strength and other various consolidation coefficients of clay by laboratory tests before establishing construction program. Generally, due to the existence of unknown factors concerned, the theoretical estimation often fails to coincide the actual result and the safe and economical construction program is not easily established based on only laboratory results. Test fill construction is frequently used to understand more precisely the actual behavior of the embankment and foundation. However, the dificulty of the analysis still leaves the problem.A test fill was constructed in Mihara Road Improvement Project and pore pressure and amount of settlement were measured for 110 days after construction. Date were analysed in comparison with laboratory results. In this paper, the authors wish to show some theoretical correlations between the calculations and measurements on this test fill.
