Abstract
A device was developed for evaluating the skin friction of a pile, wihch is named "Friction Meter". The main features of this device are that it is possible to evaluate various factors affecting the skin friction of a pile and it can easily be used in routine soil investigations. Results of a series of the friction meter test conducted on mud stone, very dense sand and hard clay are reported. Further, a comparison of the skin friction evaluated from the friction meter test and load test on actual piles is presented for a hard clay. It is demonstrated that the skin friction values determined from the friction meter test showed good agreement with the values obtained from load test.
