Abstract
This paper examines the effect of sand as a material for play therapy, based on a case of a boy who used sand variedly in his play. The play using sand was in the movement between “diffusion” and “formation”. The expression using sand contains three aspects in function, as follows: “sensory experience”, i.e., scattering sand, “medium for communication with others”, i.e., staining others with sand, and “image expression”, i.e., building the town with sand. “Sensory experience” seems to be the most basic mode. When this is shared with others, then the inner energy would be channeled to the “image expression”. The sand played a potent role in the client’s self-formation. However, it is considered that the sand behavior of spreading became one of the factors that allowed the client to remain in the world with a sense of unity.
