In the expressive therapies of Sandplay therapy and MSSM (Mutual Scribble Story Making Method), images as the key to transformation appear with the progress of psychotherapy. This report examined the images expressed by a junior high school student boy who avoided attending school, in his expression of Sandplay and MSSM. The client imagined distress in the “desert” in the first Sandplay, and created a story about “a journey in search of the legendary egg” in the first MSSM. These images continued to change, and the client also became transformed. Finally, an integration story developed, and the psychotherapy ended. The transformation of the client and the changes in images in the expressive therapies occurred simultaneously. This paper considered the function of images in psychotherapy from the viewpoint of “juvenile seclusion” and “incubation”, mainly based on the image of the “egg”.
