Anencephalus and Sex Selection

Abstract

As is well known, anencephalus is a single and not sex-linked malformation but higher related with female than male, of which real reason of the genesis is still obscure though there have been reported two different opinions, i. e. genetic effect and environmental factors affecting both fetus and mother during pregnancy.
A case of anencephalus beared twice serially is presented in this paper. For the purpose of escaping from future anxiety of patient of bearing similar malformation, so-called sex selection was adopted in the third pregnancy. In spite of it in expectation of a boy, a mature female baby was born without any other complications at term after amniocenthesis and amniography were done adequately.
We discuss here on propriety of sex selection as a method of avoiding single and not sex-linked malformation such as anencephalus.
