Abstract
Plasma cholinesterase activities were measured in various diseases by Hesterin's technique.
Low levels were found in cardiac failure, liver cirrhosis, chronic renal insufficiency, chronic pulmonary insufficiency, hypothyroidism, Banti's disease, anemia, scleroderma, carcinoma and malnutrition.
High levels were found in nephrosis, diabetes mellitus, periodic paralysis and hyperthyroidism.
Contradictory to many former authors, no specific correlation was found between plasma cholinesterase level and serum albumin level or degree of liver disorders.
Plasma cholinesterase activity was thought to be the indices of metabolic disturbances, especially of the protein metabolism.
