Abstract

Glycopeptide was isolated from tryptic digests of different parts of digestive tract, including esophagus, small intestine, large intestine and rectum of man and animals. Analysis was carried out by cellulose acetate strip electrophoresis, followed by staining with PAS (Schiff) and alcian blue.
The results have been discussed and summarized as follows.
1. The glycopeptide content was higher in the mucosa than in the muscular-serosa and was highest in the rectum mucosa, while the glycosaminoglycan indicated almost the same amount throughout the digestive tract.
2. The glycopeptide which stained with both alcian blue and PAS was absent or sparingly present in the mucosa of the small intestine, whereas it was found in noticeable extents in the mucosae of the esophagus, large intestine and rectum.
